If you guessed I am, you're right.

Soy is the first-person conjugated form of the verb ser which means to be.

Let's look at the conjugations below:

  Spanish   English
  yo soy   I am
  tú eres   you are (informal)
  el es   he is
  ella es   she is
  usted es   you are (formal)
  nosotros somos   we are
  ellos son   they are (group of males or mixed gender)
  ellas son   they are (group of females)
  ustedes son   you are (plural like you all)

 

In Spanish, there are two verbs that mean to be:

  • ser
  • estar

It's important to understand the difference between the uses.
