  • Have you ever heard of a writing prompt?

Check out this example:

My spaceship crash-landed on an alien planet. It was raining hard, and my head ached, and my leg was badly injured. I just wanted to rest, but I knew I had to keep moving, keep thinking, and figure out what to do.

  • Could you finish that story?
  • What would you say?

Creative writing is when you get to use your imagination and create your own ideas (by thinking outside of the box, or differently than others!). It includes a lot of choices!

Listen to what other kids think about being creative in this video.

Take a look at these questions:

  • Would you rather live in a bowl full of Jell-O or a bowl full of spaghetti?
  • Would you rather live in a place where it is always snowing or a place where it's always raining?
  • Would you rather have a head the size of an orange or a watermelon?

You have to think in a different way to come up with answers to those questions! The same thing happens with creative writing!

There are many different types of writing. There are also many different reasons for writing.

Sometimes, you work on longer writing projects. Those projects need research, time to edit and revise, and time for you to think deeply about your writing piece.

Other times, it's important to just sit down and write your thoughts as they come!

This lesson will focus on this quick type of creative writing.

  • Why is creative writing important?

It allows you to write your opinion and support that opinion with reasons. That's a skill that you will use a lot throughout your life!

It helps you practice writing to a prompt and staying on topic while also having FUN!

It encourages you to use your imagination, engage your thought process, and improve your problem-solving skills.

  • All of that while also writing for fun?

When you write creatively, you should follow these guidelines:

  • Stick to the topic and prompt.

Creative writing still needs to be focused and easy for your reader to understand!

  • Use as many details as you can.

You want to make your writing real, exciting, and engaging!

  • Get as much writing down as you can but stay focused.

You want to capture all your ideas, but saying what you need to say is more important than saying a lot!
