Your best friend just moved to another state, and she told you her address over the phone. You want to send her a letter, but you do not know how to actually write the address.

  • You know it needs a comma, but where does it go?

You should already know that commas are mainly used to separate words, items, or groups of words. (Like in that very sentence!)

However, commas are also needed when writing an address so it can be clearly understood by others. An address is a physical location of something.

There are two ways to write an address:

  • on an envelope
  • in other text

Let's look at writing an address on an envelope first. That's probably what you see more often!

Commas in Addresses on Envelopes

When writing an address on an envelope:

  • place a comma between the city and state

Example:

address on an envelope

Commas in Addresses in Other Text

When writing an address in other text:

  • place a comma after the street
  • place a comma between the city and state

Example:

address example

If the address comes in the middle of a sentence, place another comma after the entire address.

Example:

address in a sentence
