Do we always think ahead to what could happen if we took an unusual step? What could be the harm in taking both live figures to school? What would Omri say?

The Indian in the Cupboard is nearing the end and the events are escalating!

As you read Chapters 13 and 14, you will encounter many problems Omri and his friends face. Make a prediction about a problem Omri could encounter based on what you have read so far. Share your prediction with your parent or teacher.

In this lesson, you will explore what a problem and a solution are when encountered in a novel. Watch Introduction to Reading Skills: Text Structure - Problem and Solution, from McGraw-Hill Education PreK-2, to learn more about identifying problem and solution as you read. Tell you parent or teacher one example of problem and solution from the video:

To identify the problem and solution, you first must ask yourself what is wrong.

  • What is the challenge or obstacle the character is facing?

This is the problem. The story has a major problem that Omri faces throughout the entire novel. On his quest to solving this major problem, small or minor problems will arise in each chapter. To determine how the problem is solved, ask yourself, "How is the challenge or obstacle fixed?"

Think about your favorite movie or book. Name the major problem and solution in this movie or book. Tell your teacher about the problem and how it was solved.

You will have practice with this skill in the Go! section, but for now, continue on to the Got It? section to complete the pre-reading activities.
