Exploring Expanded Notation

In the exciting world of numbers, a unique way to write them helps you understand them better. It's called expanded notation.

Dive in and discover how it works!

What Is Place Value?

Before embarking on your journey into expanded notation, make sure you're familiar with an important concept: place value.

Imagine numbers as houses on a street. Each digit in a number lives in its own place, and that place gives it its value.

For example, in the number 345, digit 3 lives in the hundreds place, digit 4 lives in the tens place, and digit 5 lives in the ones place.

Meet Expanded Notation

Now that you've got place value down, you're ready to explore expanded notation!

Think of it as a way to break down a number into its parts, like breaking a giant cookie into smaller crumbs. In expanded notation, you write each digit in a number according to its place value and add them up.

For example, the number 13,562 looks like this in expanded notation.

Ten Thousands   Thousands   Hundreds   Tens   Ones
    1   3   5   6   2
  Place Value
    10,000   3,000   500   60   2
  Expanded Notation
    10,000 + 3,000 + 500 + 60 + 2 = 13,562

  • See how the number is split into its ten thousand, thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones?

That's the magic of expanded notation!
