What animal has a bill like a duck, a tail like a beaver, and fur like an otter?
It sounds made up… but it is real!
It is called a platypus.
At first, people did not believe this animal was real. Long ago, scientists thought someone had glued different animals together as a joke!
But the platypus is very real—and very special.
What Is a Platypus?
A platypus is a mammal. Mammals are animals that have fur and feed milk to their babies.
But here is the surprising part…
A platypus lays eggs!
It is one of the only mammals in the world that does this. Animals like this are called monotremes.
A platypus also feeds milk to its babies after they hatch. That makes it both very unusual and very interesting.
What Does a Platypus Look Like?
A platypus looks like a mix of different animals:
It has a flat bill like a duck
It has a wide tail like a beaver
It has soft fur like an otter
It has webbed feet for swimming
Its bill is not hard like a bird’s beak. It is soft and full of tiny sensors. These sensors help the platypus find food, even when it cannot see.
Where Does It Live?
Platypuses live in Australia. They spend most of their time in rivers and streams.
They are great swimmers. They use their front feet to paddle and their tail to steer.
When they dive underwater, they close their eyes, ears, and nose.
So how do they find food?
They use their bill!
What Does It Eat?
A platypus eats small animals in the water, like:
worms
insects
tiny shellfish
It scoops food from the bottom of rivers. It even picks up a little mud and gravel. This helps it mash its food because it does not have teeth.

A platypus can stay underwater for about 1–2 minutes.
It stores food in its cheeks and eats it later.
Male platypuses have a sharp spur on their back legs that can release venom.
Baby platypuses are very tiny when they hatch—about the size of a small bean.
Why Clean Water Matters
Platypuses need clean water to live.
The small animals they eat can only live in clean water. If the water gets dirty or polluted, those animals disappear. Then the platypus has no food.
Simple choices, like using safe soaps and keeping water clean, help animals, such as the platypus, survive.
