Audio:

Have you ever noticed how much trash you throw away each day? Take a moment to look around your home, and look in your various wastebaskets and trash cans. Are your cans full or nearly full of items that have been thrown away?

Make a list of items you see in your kitchen trash can.

Did you know that many of the items you found in your trash can be recycled? Recycled means "to be made new again or use again." We will watch a short video about recycling. Think about your list as you watch.

While watching, ask yourself these questions:

  • What is recycling?
  • What types of trash can be recycled?
  • Why is it important to recycle?
  • How big is 5 billion tons?
  • What are the three "R" words to remember about trash?
  • How much of our trash can be recycled (what percentage)?
