What Is It?
Black History Month is a time to honor and celebrate the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history.
It’s also a chance to learn about the struggles for equality and justice that are part of American history.
Why Was It Started?
Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a historian, started Black History Month in 1926.
He believed that the stories of Black Americans were being left out of history books, so he created a week to focus on these stories. Over time, it grew into a whole month.
Why February?
February was chosen because it’s the month when two important people in Black history were born: Frederick Douglass, a former slave and famous speaker for freedom, and Abraham Lincoln, the U.S. president who helped end slavery.
What Does It Give Us?
