  • Do you have a large number that feels too big to handle?

Don't fear! Rounding Rayna is here!

By rounding numbers using place value, Rounding Rayna makes it easy to understand those big numbers and can save the day!

  • But guess what?

Rounding Rayna is not the only one who can round numbers. You can be a rounding hero, too!

Discover how you can make big numbers easier to understand.

Start with the number 8,964.

Say the word aloud: Eight thousand, nine hundred, sixty-four. Phew! What a mouthful.

  • How can you make this number easier without changing the value?

Numbers like 10, 100, or 1000 are much easier to work with.

  • But how do you get started?

Begin with place value!

When a number is written out, the position of each number is very important. Where each digit is located tells you its value.

Check out a place value chart to see what each digit means.

a place value chart of 4 columns that includes the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones places

This means there are 8 thousands, 9 hundreds, 6 tens, and 4 ones.

That is a big number! So, round it to the nearest thousand.

  • How do you round numbers?

Remember this important rule: If the number is less than 5, round down. If it’s 5 or greater, round up.

Here’s a fun saying to help you.

If the number is 0-4, round it down to the floor. If the number is 5-9, round it up to the sky!

If the number is 0-4, round it down to the floor. If the number is 5-9, round it up to the sky.

Write down the number 8,964 on your paper.

When rounding to the nearest thousand, look at the digit in the hundreds place, which is the number right next to the thousands place. For 8,964, that’s 9.

  • How does the 9 help you round the number?

Since 9 is greater than 5, you round up to the sky! This means you round 8,964 up to the next thousand: 9,000.

Think about this number using a number line.

number line showing the number closer to 9,000

If you place 8,964 on the number line, you can see that it is much closer to 9,000 than 8,000. You rounded correctly!

Try another example.

Write the number 4,175 on your paper.

Circle the number in the thousands place.

  • Which number did you circle?

Great! You circled the 4, which represents 4,000.

If you round this number to the nearest thousand, it could be down to 4,000 or up to 5,000.

Now, underline the number in the hundreds place.

  • Which number did you underline?

Yes. You underlined the 1, which represents 100. Now, use your rounding saying again.

If the number is 0-4, round it down to the floor. If the number is 5-9, round it up to the sky.

  • How should you round this number to the nearest thousand?

Round down! Yes, this number is closer to 4,000 than it is to 5,000.

If you look at it on a number line, you can tell you made the right choice.
