  • If your friend told you a purple elephant was riding a bicycle with a hat on its head in the street, would you think it was true or false?

purple elephant riding a bike

Time to put on your detective hat and think about this.

  • Are purple elephants real?

Definitely not!

  • Can an elephant ride a bicycle in real life?

Very unlikely.

So, this statement is false.

It is definitely not true.

Great work, detective!

Just like a sentence can be true or false, so can number sentences!

Neat!

  • Are you ready to become a math investigator and solve the mystery of true-or-false number sentences?

Get ready, get set, go!

  • Have you ever seen a math equation?

Look at the addition equation below.

3 + 4 = 7 + 0

This equation has two different addition sentences on each side of the equal sign.

Your job is to find out if the answers to each number sentence are true and equal to each other.

Time to put on your detective hat again!

First, solve one side of the equation: 3 + 4

  • What does 3 + 4 equal?

3 + 4 = ?

Use a math strategy you know to find out!

For example, you can count up using a number line.

3 + 4 = 7!

So, that side of the equation is 7, and it is true.

  • Now, what about the other side, 7 + 0?

Any number plus 0 is always that number.

So, 7 + 0 = 7!

That is another true number sentence!

  • Now, are both sides equal to each other?

They are!

They are both equal to 7 and they are both true, so this addition equation is true!

Time to try another example!

  • Is this subtraction statement true or false?

Time to investigate!

9 - 5 = 10 - 4

First, solve one side of the equation: 9 - 5.

  • What is 9 - 5?

Use a math strategy you know to find out!

For example, you can count back.

9 - 5 = 4

Great!

So, that side of the equation equals 4, and it is true.

  • Now, what about the other side, 10 - 4 ?

10 - 4 = 6 !

So, this equation is false!

  • Why?

Because each side of the equal sign is not the same.

9 - 5 = 4

10 - 4 = 6

4 does not equal 6, so this subtraction equation is false!

subtraction nine minus five
