He took Cooper on a walk. Then, he gave Cooper 5 treats!

Later, Ben’s mom came home from work. She gave Cooper 5 more treats!

Ben wonders how many dog treats he has left for Cooper.

  • How can you help Ben find the answer?

Ben needs to find out how many treats he has left for Cooper.

You can help Ben by using addition and subtraction!

Look at Ben’s story more closely.

Ben bought 12 dog treats at the pet shop. He already had 5 dog treats at home.

First, write an addition expression.

12 + 5 =

Use a number line to add.

Start at 12. Move 5 steps forward to add 5.

number line showing 12 to 17

You landed on 17. 17 is the sum of 12 and 5!

12 + 5 = 17

Ben has 17 total dog treats!

Now, look at the next part of Ben’s story.

He took Cooper on a walk. Then, he gave Cooper 5 treats!

Ben started with 17 dog treats and took 5 away.

Write a subtraction expression.

17 - 5 =

Use a number line to subtract.

Start at 17. Move 5 steps backward to subtract 5.

number line showing 17 to 12

You landed on 12. 12 is the difference of 17 and 5!

17 - 5 = 12

Ben has 12 dog treats left after the walk!

Finally, look at the end of Ben’s story.

Later, Ben’s mom came home from work. She gave Cooper 5 more treats!

Ben has 12 dog treats after Cooper’s walk. His mom takes 5 away.

Write a subtraction expression.

12 - 5 =

Use a number line to subtract.

Start at 12. Move 5 steps backward to subtract 5.

number line showing 12 to 7

You landed on 7. 7 is the difference of 12 and 5!

12 - 5 = 7

Ben has 7 dog treats left for Cooper!

You added and subtracted by 5 to help Ben solve his problem!

Look at the three equations you used.

12 + 5 = 17

17 - 5 = 12

12 - 5 = 7

  • What do you notice?

Try some more adding and subtracting by 5.

There are 8 dog treats. Takeaway 5 dog treats.

8 dog treats with 5 crossed out

Count the dog treats left. There are 3 dog treats left.

8 - 5 = 3

Next, there are 8 dog treats. Add 5 more dog treats.

8 dog treats plus 5 dog treats

Count the total number of dog treats. There are 13 dog treats.

8 + 5 = 13

Compare both equations.

8 - 5 = 3

8 + 5 = 13

  • What do you notice?

Both equations start with the same number. Also, both answers have the same number in the ones place!

This was true in Ben’s story, too!

12 + 5 = 17

12 - 5 = 7

Now, it's your turn to practice adding and subtracting by 5!
