  • Toys are so much fun, right?

Imagine a friend sharing a toy with you.

  • If you already have one toy, how many toys do you have now?

Using mental math, you can figure this out and much more, just by thinking!

Math can be exciting and easy when you know how to add with your mind.

Learn how to use mental math to add one or two to numbers!

Mental math is like a superpower for your brain! You don’t need any pencils or paper — just your amazing mind!

Wow!

Think about your favorite snacks.

  • Do you like cookies?

Yum!

Pretend you have two cookies.

Then, you get one more cookie.

  • How many cookies do you have now?

Use the number line to count!

Start at two (because you had two cookies). Count up one more.

  • What number do you land on?

1 ⇒ 2 ⇒ 3

2 + 1 = 3!

You have three cookies altogether!

Great work!

Now try another one, but this time with some toy cars!

Imagine you have four toy cars.

Now, you add two more toy cars.

Use the number line to count up from four.

Start at four and count up two more.

4 ⇒ 5 ⇒ 6

  • What number do you find?

4 + 2 = 6!

Then, hold up two more fingers.

  • How many fingers do you see altogether?

  • If you add one more finger, how many do you have?

1 ⇒ 2 ⇒ 3 ⇒ 4 ⇒ 5
