  • Have you ever visited a bookstore?

Watch the video below to see what it looks like.

When you walk through a bookstore, books are everywhere! You can't read them all, so you have to pick one.

  • How will you choose a book?
  • What will you look at to help you decide?

The book covers, of course!

Book covers tell you a lot about a book, even though they don't have many words. Learn what a book cover looks like and what information is on the cover!

Book covers are important because they tell you the book's name, who wrote it, and a little bit about the story inside.

You can learn a lot from a book cover!

Listen to this funny pirate song about the parts of a book. The song talks about many parts, but you only need to listen for these parts of the book.

  • Front Cover
  • Title Page
  • Back Cover

  • Did you hear the singers talk about the front cover, title page, and back cover?

Great!

Now, look at what you can find in each part.

The Front Cover

The front cover of a book is an exciting place full of things to learn about the book! Take a look at the front cover of this book.

Percy Jackson's Greek Gods cover

This cover tells us three important things about the book: the title, the author, and the illustrator. Take a closer look!

The title, or the name of the book, is Percy Jackson's Greek Gods. You can tell this is the title because it will be in the biggest letters!

The author, which is the person who wrote the words in the book, is Rick Riordan. Usually, the author's name is also in big letters, but not as big as the title.

Sometimes the cover will even have the word by next to the author's name so you know it is the author.

The illustrator, which is the person who draws the pictures for the book, is John Rocco. His name is in smaller letters at the bottom of the cover.

The illustrator's name will always have "Illustrated By" in front of their name so that you don't get confused and think they are the author.

The front cover will also have a picture on it. It is often a picture of the main character or a few important characters.

This cover has pictures of Greek gods and Percy Jackson. The book is about these people, so they are on the cover!

The Title Page

Now, open up the book's cover and look at the first page, the title page.

Percy Jackson's Greek Gods title page

The title page has the same information as the cover. It might even have a small picture, but it will not have as big of a design as the front cover.

You'll find the title again in the biggest letters. You should also see the author's name and the illustrator's name again.

The Back Cover

If you close the book again and flip it over, you find the back cover.  Look at the back cover of this book.

The back cover is special because it tells you more about the story inside the book. When you read the back cover, you can learn some of what the book is about.

It won't tell you the whole story, but it will tell you about the main characters and what problems they might have to solve in the book.

Sometimes, the back cover will also have the book's title again, but not always. It might also have reviews of what people liked about the book, like this back cover from Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick Rules.
