What Makes a Neighborhood?

Every neighborhood has special places that help people live, work, and have fun. These are called community places.

Some are for learning, some for helping others, and some for enjoying time together.

Look at a few you might find near you!

Places That Help Us Every Day

Some places provide things families need.

• Supermarket: Where people buy food to eat.

• Bakery: Where you can smell and buy fresh bread, cakes, or cookies.

• Gas station: Where cars and buses stop to fill up before they go.

• Restaurant or coffee shop: Where people eat meals or meet friends.

• Can you think of one of these places near where you live?

Places for Learning and Growing

Other neighborhood spots help us learn or stay healthy.

• School: Where kids go to learn, read, and play.

• Library: A quiet place full of stories, facts, and imagination.

• Doctor’s office or dentist: Where we go to keep our bodies healthy and strong.

• Hospital: A big building that helps people when they are very sick or hurt.

Each of these places helps people take care of themselves and others.

Places for Fun and Relaxing

Every neighborhood needs places for play and rest.

• Park: A place to run, swing, or have a picnic.

• Pool: A place to splash, swim, and cool off.

• Zoo: Where people visit animals from around the world.

• Movie theater: Where families can laugh, imagine, and share stories together.

Whether your neighborhood is in the city, a town, or the country, there’s always a place nearby that makes people smile!

People Who Work in Neighborhoods

Neighborhoods are full of helpers! 

• Mail carriers bring letters to your home.

• Teachers help children learn new things.

• Police officers keep people safe.

• Firefighters help during emergencies.

• Store workers, bus drivers, and bakers make sure the community runs smoothly.

Each person’s job helps the neighborhood stay friendly, safe, and strong.

Every Neighborhood Is Unique

No two neighborhoods look the same.

Some have busy streets and tall buildings. Others have farms and open spaces. But each one is full of people who work together and care about one another.
