Where is the puppy? How would you tell me where the puppy is located?

A preposition is a part of speech that tells you about the location, direction, or time that affects a noun.

This may seem a little tricky, but once you dive into this lesson, you will see how easy it is to use prepositions. In this lesson, you will learn all about prepositions that are used to describe the location of people, places, and things.

Are you ready to get started? Fantastic!

You looked at a picture of a tiny puppy. The tiny puppy is inside of the bag. Another way you could describe the location of the puppy is by saying, "The puppy is in the bag.” You can use the prepositions "inside" and "in" to describe the location of the puppy.

Wow! Did you know there were so many prepositions in the English language? All of these prepositions can be used to describe the location of people, places, and things. Are you ready to look at some examples? Great!

How would you describe where the guinea pig is? Tell your parent or teacher.

guinea pig

Did you share your answer? If so, great work! If not, share your answer now.

The guinea pig is on top of the book. The words "on top of" tell you where the guinea pig is. These words are prepositions because they tell you the location of the guinea pig.

Where is the chipmunk located? Tell your parent or teacher. After sharing your answer, read the example sentences below aloud to your parent or teacher:

chipmunk on water

The chipmunk is above the water.
The chipmunk is on the log.

Can you tell your parent or teacher where the monkeys are located? Use one of the preposition words you learned in this lesson in your example. After sharing, read the example sentences below aloud to your parent or teacher:

monkeys on fence

The monkeys are beside each other.
The monkeys are on top of the fence.
The monkeys are next to each other.

Try describing the location of the squirrel by using a preposition. Share your description with your parent or teacher. When you are finished sharing, read the examples below aloud to your parent or teacher:

squirrel

The squirrel is between the branches.
The squirrel is near the branches.

You did an excellent job using prepositions to tell the location of people, places, and things!

Before moving on to the Got It? section, tell your parent or teacher one sentence that includes a preposition that describes the location of something in your learning space. After sharing, move on to the Got It? section to play on online game!
