Mode Mission: Finding the Most Popular Number
Imagine you’re planning a pizza party for your friends.
Everyone gets to choose their favorite topping. After you collect all the votes, you want to know which topping was picked the most—because that’s the one you should order the most of!

That “most popular” choice is just like the mode in math.
The mode is the number (or item) that appears most often in a set of data. It’s like the winner in a popularity contest.
Sometimes there’s one winner, sometimes there’s a tie, and sometimes there’s no clear winner at all.
Step 1: Know What You’re Looking For
The mode is not about adding or dividing—it’s about spotting the most frequent number in your list.
Example
The number 6 appears the most times, so the mode is 6.
Step 2: There Can Be More Than One Mode
If two or more numbers appear the same number of times—and more often than the rest—then your data is multimodal (fancy math word for “more than one mode”).
Example
Both 2 and 3 appear twice. This set has two modes.

Step 3: When There’s No Mode
Sometimes all the numbers occur only once. In that case, there’s no mode—there’s no clear “most popular” number.
Step 4: Organizing Helps
If your data set is large or messy, put the numbers in order from smallest to largest. This makes it easier to see which value shows up most often.

Ordered
99 appears twice—more than any other number—so the mode is 99.
Why the Mode is Useful
The mode is great for spotting trends and making choices based on what’s most common.
Sports: Which score happened most often in the season.
Sales: Which product size or color sells the most.
Surveys: Which rating or choice is most popular.
Voting: Which option gets the most votes.
