Sound Detective Challenge!

Every word has a secret sound at the very beginning. It’s the sound that tells what letter the word starts with.

Listening for that first sound helps with reading, writing, and spelling.

  • Ready to begin?

Say the word dog out loud. Listen closely.

  • What sound comes first?

It’s /d/! That’s the beginning sound.

Keep reading to learn how to hear those first sounds in words!

What Are Beginning Sounds?

Beginning sounds are the first sounds heard when saying a word out loud.

These sounds are part of phonics, and they help with figuring out which letter a word starts with.

Here is an example.

Say the word sun slowly: sss—un.

The beginning sound is /s/.

That means the word starts with the letter S.

sun

Here’s a trick to help.

  1. Say the word slowly.

  2. Stretch out the first sound.

  3. Listen for the sound your mouth makes at the start.

  4. Say just that first sound all by itself.

Try it with these words.

Ball → /b/

Cake → /k/

Fish → /f/

It’s okay to try more than once! Sounding out the beginning of a word takes practice.
