Lesson ID: 10932
Use decimals to plan movie nights, snack stands, sports stats, and more while learning to add and subtract like a math pro!
Picture This!
You walk into a snack shop with $10.00 in your pocket. A smoothie costs $4.75, and a granola bar costs $1.25.
Suddenly, decimals become very important!
Decimals help people every single day. You see them in money, sports scores, temperatures, gas prices, video game statistics, recipes, and even store discounts. Learning how to add and subtract decimals helps you make smart choices in real life.

Decimal Detectives
Decimals are numbers that show parts of a whole.
Take a look at this number:
3.45
The decimal point separates whole numbers from parts of a whole.
The 3 means 3 whole units.
The 4 means 4 tenths.
The 5 means 5 hundredths.
Money is one of the easiest ways to understand decimals.
$1.00 means one whole dollar.
$0.50 means fifty cents, or half of a dollar.
$0.25 means twenty-five cents, or one quarter of a dollar.
When you add or subtract money, you are really adding or subtracting decimals!
Why Place Value Matters
When you work with decimals, place value is very important. Every digit must stay in the correct place.
Look at these numbers:
12.35
2.4
The decimal points must line up before solving.
Here is the correct setup:
| 1 | 2 | . | 3 | 5 | |
| 2 | . | 4 | 0 |
Notice the extra zero added to the end of 2.4. Adding zeros to the end of a decimal does not change its value. It simply helps every place line up correctly.
Think of it like lining up players on a basketball team. If everyone stands in the wrong spot, chaos begins!

The Three Big Rules
You can remember decimal addition and subtraction with three simple rules:
A catchy phrase can help you remember these same steps:
“Line up the decimals when you are adding or subtracting. Add extra zeros when you need equal places.”
Adding Decimals
Try this example:
14.20 + 1.34
Step 1: Line up the decimals.
| 1 | 4 | . | 2 | 0 | ||
| + | 1 | . | 3 | 4 |
Step 2: Add from right to left.
Hundredths: 0 + 4 = 4
Tenths: 2 + 3 = 5
Ones: 4 + 1 = 5
Tens: 1 stays the same
| 1 | 4 | . | 2 | 0 | ||
| + | 1 | . | 3 | 4 | ||
| 1 | 5 | . | 5 | 4 |
Answer:15.54
Subtracting Decimals
Now try subtraction:
18.05 - 6.03
Step 1: Line up the decimals.
| 1 | 8 | . | 0 | 5 | ||
| - | 6 | . | 0 | 3 |
Step 2: Subtract from right to left.
Hundredths: 5 - 3 = 2
Tenths: 0 - 0 = 0
Ones: 8 - 6 = 2
Tens: 1 stays the same
| 1 | 8 | . | 0 | 5 | ||
| - | 6 | . | 0 | 3 | ||
| 1 | 2 | . | 0 | 2 |
Answer: 12.02
What Happens If the Numbers Do Not Match?
Sometimes one number has more decimal places than the other.
Example:
5.5 - 2.18
Add a zero to make the places equal:
| 5 | . | 5 | 0 | |||
| - | 2 | . | 1 | 8 |
Now subtract normally.
| 5 | . | 5 | 0 | |||
| - | 2 | . | 1 | 8 | ||
| 3 | . | 3 | 2 |
Answer: 3.32
Math Check!
Try these on your own:
Decimals in Real Life
Imagine planning a movie night.
Ticket: $6.50
Popcorn: $3.25
Drink: $2.00
First, add the popcorn and drink:
| 3 | . | 2 | 5 | |||
| + | 2 | . | 0 | 0 | ||
| 5 | . | 2 | 5 |
Next, add the ticket:
| 6 | . | 5 | 0 | |||
| + | 5 | . | 2 | 5 | ||
| 1 | 1 | . | 7 | 5 |
You would need $11.75 for movie night.
Decimals help people stay on budget, compare prices, measure ingredients, and track scores. They are useful everywhere!
