What Is the South, Exactly?

The Southern United States, also called "the South," includes 16 states divided into three groups.

• South Atlantic States: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware

• East South Central States: Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee

• West South Central States: Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas

These states stretch from the Atlantic Coast to the edge of the desert, covering beaches, swamps, mountains, plains, and bustling cities

The South Is Booming

• Did you know that Houston, Texas, is the fourth-largest city in the U.S.?

• Or that many Southern cities like Atlanta, Charlotte, and Nashville are among the fastest-growing in the country?

From skyscrapers to stadiums, the South’s cities are full of life, diversity, and opportunity.

Culture That Sings, Dances, and Tastes Delicious

If the South had a soundtrack, it would be a mashup of country twang, soulful blues, gospel, and hip-hop beats. This is the birthplace of jazz and rock and roll—and every corner has a story to tell through music.

Food is just as important. Think spicy gumbo, sweet tea, fried chicken, and pecan pie. It’s no surprise that Southern hospitality often includes a home-cooked meal.

Southern manners are legendary. You’ll hear “ma’am” and “sir,” and don’t be surprised if a stranger holds the door or waves hello. It’s just how things are done.

And the art? From colorful murals in Atlanta to folk crafts in the Appalachian mountains, Southern creativity is everywhere.

A Complicated History That Changed the Nation

The South played a huge role in U.S. history. During the Civil War, many Southern states seceded from the Union. The fight over slavery and state rights left a lasting mark and set the stage for future change.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the civil rights movement was born in the South. Brave men, women, and even children stood up for equal rights, changing the nation through marches, speeches, and peaceful protests.

Cities like Birmingham, Montgomery, and Little Rock became symbols of strength and courage.
