The Northeast is the oldest, the smallest, the most highly populated, and the richest region in the United States!

The Northeast consists of nine states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania (sometimes Delaware and Maryland are included in this region).

Begin by reading some of the basic U.S. State Facts about this region to learn more about the geography, history, and people who are truly unique, diverse, and highly important to the United States.

Geography

The Northeast region borders Canada, and its landscapes vary from the rocky coasts of New England to farms in the Ohio Valley.

Cities

The Northeast is the most densely populated region of the U.S.

Much of the Northeast is a megalopolis, a string of large cities that have grown together. The Northeast megalopolis comprises Boston, Washington D.C., New York City, and Philadelphia.

In fact, New York City is the most populated city in the U.S., and Philadelphia ranks number five.

Despite the high number of large cities in this region, it is also full of rural areas.

This is where it all began! All nine of the Northeast states were a part of the original 13 colonials in the U.S.
