Lesson Plan - Get It!

Do you celebrate Christmas? Hanukkah? Kwanzaa?

christmas, hanukkah, kwanza

What do you do for these holidays? Do you have the same celebrations and food each year during these holidays?

People around the world celebrate different holidays, and some people don’t celebrate holidays at all.

Each community of people has its own way to live life, which is usually passed down from ancestors. Ancestors are all of the people in your family who have lived before you.

The way people live their lives, their ideas and what they believe, is called their culture. You have been raised in a certain culture, and that is all you know. After you watch two videos on culture, you will get the chance to look into your own culture.

Watch What is Culture- Elementary Lesson:

As you watch and listen to Cultures Around the World, by Neyra Hanley, pay attention to see if you can find pictures of your own culture:

  • Was there a picture from a culture different from yours that stood out to you?

Share what it was with your teacher. You can always review the videos if you don’t remember specific pictures.

Next, continue on to the Got It? section to learn more about cultures.
