Every word you read and write has a vowel. The short vowel sounds make up many of those.

Practice reading words with a short vowel sound in this lesson. Your goals are to read and write each word correctly by listening to all its letter sounds.

Get started with this video to review the short vowel sounds.

• Are you ready to play a game with the short vowel sounds?

Follow these steps.

1. Print out the Short Vowel Picture Cards found in Downloadable Resources in the right-hand sidebar.

2. Cut out the letters and the picture cards.

3. Lay the vowel cards (a, e, i, o, u) out in front of you to make five columns.

4. Place the picture cards into a pile.

5. Draw one card from the pile, and say the picture name.

6. As you say the picture name, listen carefully to the vowel sound.

7. Place the card in the column for the vowel sound that matches it.

8. Repeat this procedure until all picture cards have been sorted into the columns.
