I finished reading my book.

  • Now what?

Reading a book doesn't end when you read the last sentence.

Good readers use many strategies when they read. Reading strategies help readers understand and comprehend what they are reading.

Take a moment to think about the strategies you use when you read. Then write them down on a piece of paper.

  • How many strategies did you list?

Next, compare your list with the list below. These are just a few strategies readers use:

  • Make predictions
  • Use context clues from the text to make inferences
  • Develop stop and ask questions
  • Make connections with story elements
  • Use what you already know

Now, watch a teacher explain reading comprehension strategies to her students before they sing a song about them!

  • After watching the video, are there any strategies you want to add to your list?
  • Are there any reading strategies you use that weren't talked about in the video or listed in this lesson? If so, what would you add?

Now move on to the Got It? section and practice using your reading strategies!
