The Amazing Number 3
First up is number 3! You probably have three of something—like friends, toys, or snacks.
When a number can be divided by 3 evenly, it’s divisible by 3. To find these numbers, just keep adding 3s together.
Here's how it works
3 + 3 = 6, so 6 is divisible by 3.
3 + 3 + 3 = 9, so 9 is divisible by 3.
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12, so 12 is divisible by 3.
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15, so 15 is divisible by 3.
And you can keep going!
For 6, write the expression like this.
6 ÷ 3 = 2
Six divided by three equals two.
If you look at the chart, 2 is the amount of 3s added together to make 6!
So, 3 goes into 6 two times.
It's the same with 9, 12, and 15. Three goes into 9 three times. On the chart, there are three 3s added together.
It's like a jigsaw puzzle where everything fits!
Quick Question: Is 3 divisible by itself?
Yes! Every number (except 0) is divisible by itself, and the answer is always 1.
The Amazing Number 5
Now, check out number 5! You’ve probably used 5 a lot—think about 5 fingers on your hand.
Numbers divisible by 5 are easy to spot. You just keep adding 5s. Here are some.
5, 10, 15, 20
The expressions look like this.
5 ÷ 5 = 1
10 ÷ 5 = 2
15 ÷ 5 = 3
20 ÷ 5 = 4
5 divides into these numbers perfectly!
The Jobs of Numbers
Here is something else that numbers do. They have jobs!
In a division problem, every number has a job.
divisor: the number doing the dividing (like 3 or 5)
dividend: the number being divided
quotient: the result or answer
Here you can see all the jobs.
Fun Fact: Any number divisible by another number is called divisible by that number. For example, 21 is divisible by 3!
