  • Do you have your own piggy bank with money in it?

Maybe you have earned some money for doing chores.

Maybe you got some money as a birthday gift.

getting money for doing chores

Money is all around!

It is a part of our daily lives.

That is why knowing how to add it up is so important!

  • Are you ready to become a money math wiz?

Get ready, get set, go!

Time to meet different coins and bills!

This is a penny.

penny

A penny has a value of 1 cent.

You can write 1 cent as $0.01.

This is a nickel.

nickel

A nickel has a value of 5 cents.

You can write 5 cents as $0.05.

Here comes the dime!

dime

A dime has a value of 10 cents.

You can write 10 cents as $0.10.

Next up is the quarter.

quarter

A quarter has a value of 25 cents!

You can write 25 cents as $0.25.

Wow!

Now, on to the dollar bills!

dollar

A one-dollar bill has a value of $1.00.

There are five-dollar bills, ten-dollar bills, and more!

When you add money, line up the decimal points.

This keeps the dollars with the dollars and the cents with the cents.

Look at this example.

    $ 5 . 3 5
  + $ 2 . 7 0
    $ 8 . 0 5

You can subtract money the same way.

    $ 5 . 3 5
  - $ 2 . 7 0
    $ 2 . 6 5

Nice work, money math wiz!

Time to add!

Mya has some coins in her piggy bank.

She wants to add everything together to see how much she has.

Help Mya add coins!

Mya

Start with the smallest coins.

Mya should count the pennies first. She counts her pennies and has 16 pennies.

Mya should count the nickels next. She has 5 nickels.

Each nickel is worth 5 cents, or 5 pennies.

Since she has 5 nickels, add 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5.

Five nickels have a value of 25 cents, or 25 pennies.

This is what Mya has:

16 pennies - $0.16

5 nickels - $0.25

To add everything up, you can regroup.

Look at the picture of this math problem showing regrouping.

  • How many tens are in 16?

There is one ten.

  • How many ones are in 16?

There are 6 ones.

  • How many tens are in 25?

There are two tens.

  • How many ones are in 25?

There are 5 ones.

Count the total number of ones.

There are 11 ones, so you can make a ten!

Move 1 ten to the tens column.

Now, there are 4 tens and 1 one.

So, the answer is $0.41.

Mya has 41 cents, or $0.41, in her piggy bank.

Way to go!

Now, try adding dollars and cents.

    $ 1 . 4 4
  + $ 2 . 8 6

Start with the pennies.

4 pennies + 6 pennies = 10 pennies

Ten pennies have the same value as 1 dime.

Regroup the 10 pennies as 1 dime.

Now, add the dimes.

4 dimes + 8 dimes + 1 regrouped dime = 13 dimes

Thirteen dimes have the same value as 1 dollar and 3 dimes.

Regroup 10 dimes as 1 dollar.

Now, add the dollars.

1 dollar + 2 dollars + 1 regrouped dollar = 4 dollars

The answer is $4.30.

    $ 1 . 4 4
  + $ 2 . 8 6
    $ 4 . 3 0
