Time to add!

Mya has some coins in her piggy bank.

She wants to add everything together to see how much she has.

Let's help Mya add coins!

cartoon girl putting coins in piggy bank

Start with the smallest coins.

Mya should count the pennies first. She counts her pennies and has 16 pennies.

Mya should count the nickels next. She has 5 nickels.

Each nickel is worth 5 cents (or 5 pennies).

Since she has 5 nickels, add 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5.

Five nickels have a value of 25 cents (25 pennies).

To add the value of all of the coins, you can convert or change everything to pennies!

This is like turning everything to ones.

Everything is all set!

This is what Mya has:

16 pennies - $.16

5 nickels - $.25

To add everything up, you can regroup.

Look at the picture of this math problem showing regrouping.

  • How many tens are in 16?

There is one ten.

  • How many ones are in 16?

There are 6 ones.

  • Ok, how many tens are in 25?

There are two tens.

  • How many ones are in 25?

There are 5 ones.

Count the total number of ones.

Wow! There are 11 ones, so you can make a ten!

When you add one more ten to the tens column, you have 4 tens instead of 3!

  • What's left in the ones column after you move the ten?

Only 1.

So the answer is $.41 cents!

Mya has $.41 cents in her piggy bank.

Way to go!
