  • Did you know math and space travel are like two peas in a pod?

You can't have one without the other!

Get ready for a math adventure in space!

To complete this mission, you will use place value to add two numbers to 10.

  • And guess what?

You'll be adding numbers all the way up to 100!

Wow!

So, put on your space suit, math explorer, and prepare for launch!

Here you go!

You have accepted the math mission!

Yay!

Now, it's time to get to work!

First, meet your math crew-mates: the tens place and the ones place.

  • The tens place tells you how many tens you have.
  • The ones place tells you how many ones you have.

Start the mission by adding 30 and 12.

30 + 12 = ?

First, look at the tens place.

  • How many tens are in 30?

There are three tens in 30.

3 tens = 30

  • How many tens are in 12?

There is one ten in 12.

1 ten = 10

Add those together!

3 tens + 1 ten = 4 tens or 40

Great job!

Now on to the ones place!

  • How many ones are in 30?

There are 0 ones in 30.

  • How many ones are in 12?

There are 2 ones in 12.

0 ones + 2 ones = 2 ones or 2

So, you have 40 (or 4 tens) and 2 (or 2 ones)!

The sum is 42!

40 + 2 = 42!

Awesome work!

Try another one!

Here is the next problem to solve.

41 + 24 = ?

Just like before, use place value to add 41 and 24.

First, start with the tens!

There are four tens in 41 and two tens in 24.

  • 4 tens = 40
  • 2 tens = 20

When you add those together, you have 6 tens or 60!

Now, on to the ones!

There is 1 one in 41 and 4 ones in 24.

1 ones + 4 ones = 5 ones or 5

So, you have 60 (or 6 tens) and 5 (or 5 ones), which is 65!

60 + 5 = 65

You completed the mission!

Way to go, math explorer!
