Imagine this: 8 ducklings are happily swimming in a pond when 7 more join them.

  • How many ducklings are swimming now?

But wait! Suddenly, 4 of them flap their wings and fly away.

  • How many ducklings are left?

A group of ducks are flying and landing in a pond during a sunny day in winter.

Don’t worry, solving these puzzles is easier than you think! Today, you'll become a number-solving expert.

  • Ready to fly in?

Addition and subtraction are like magic tricks for numbers. Here’s how they work.

Addition

Addition is like bringing groups together to make one big group.

The answer you get when you add is called the sum.

Here’s an example.

5 + 3 = 8

Five and three together make eight!

  • Did you know?

You can flip the numbers around, and it still works!

3 + 5 = 8

You can also write addition vertically, which means up and down.

    3     5
  + 5   + 3
    8     8

Subtraction

Subtraction is like taking something away from a group.

The answer here is called the difference.

8 - 3 = 5

If you have 8 apples and eat 3, you’ll have 5 left.

But be careful! The bigger number always comes first in subtraction.

This is easier to see when you write it vertically.

    8
  - 3
    5

Here’s a Cool Trick.

You can check subtraction using addition. It’s like a number puzzle!

If 10 - 6 = 4, you can check by flipping it.

6 + 4 = 10

    10     6
  - 6   + 4
    4     10

One More Thing

Numbers like to hang out in families called fact families.

These families have three numbers that work together to make addition and subtraction sentences.

Here is an example.

4, 6, and 10 are a fact family.

  • 4 + 6 = 10
  • 6 + 4 = 10
  • 10 - 6 = 4
  • 10 - 4 = 6
    4     6     10     10
  + 6   + 4   - 6   - 4
    10     10     4     6

Think of fact families as number BFFs—they’re always connected!
