Explore how the moon changes shape! Learn all 8 moon phases, practice with fun games, and create your own moon project.
Peek-a-Boo Moon!
Some nights, it’s a glowing circle. Other nights, it’s just a slice. And sometimes... it disappears completely!
But don’t worry—the moon isn’t hiding on purpose. It’s just going through something called phases.

That means it changes how it looks to us from the earth, all month long. It’s kind of like the moon is putting on a little light show in the sky every single night!
Let’s blast off!
Light, Shadow, and a Spinning Dance
The moon doesn’t glow by itself. It’s lit up by the sun, just like the earth is!
But here’s the twist—the moon is always moving around the earth in a big circle. This path is called an orbit, and it takes about 29 days to go all the way around.

As the moon moves, the sunlight hits it from different angles. That’s why we see different shapes—or phases—from the earth. Sometimes we see a lot of light, sometimes a little, and sometimes none at all!
Remember these important facts.
The moon doesn’t change shape—it always stays round.
It just looks different to us because of how light and shadow fall on it as it orbits the earth.
Moon Phases: The Magic 8
The moon has eight phases that repeat every month. Meet them in order.
You can’t see the moon at all! It’s still there, but the sun is lighting up the side we can’t see.

Now, a tiny slice of light appears on the right side. "Waxing" means it's getting bigger!

Half the moon is lit—on the right side. It looks like a cookie with one perfect bite!

Most of the moon is lit, but it is not quite full. It's almost there!

TA-DA! The whole face of the moon shines brightly in the sky like a giant glowing circle.

Now the moon starts shrinking! "Waning" means getting smaller. The left side is still mostly lit.

Just like the First Quarter, but now the left half is lit. The right side is dark.

Only a tiny slice of light remains on the left side. Next up: New Moon again!

A Sky Show That Never Ends
This cycle happens every month. That means you can look up anytime and spot what phase the moon is in!
Try this.
See a tiny curve? That’s a crescent.
A full circle? Full moon!
Half a moon? It’s a quarter moon.
More than half but not full? That’s a gibbous.
Every phase tells a story about where the moon is in its orbit and how sunlight is shining on it.
The moon is like a space mirror—reflecting light and playing shadow games with the sun!
