There are many words in the English language that mean the same thing, or have the same meaning.

Let's look at an example:

1. Joey is happy today.
2. Joey is joyful today.

Do these two sentences say two different things? No, because "happy" and "joyful" have the same, or very similar, meaning. Words that have the same meaning are called synonyms. A great way to remember the word "synonym" is to think about synonyms as words that share the same meaning. In this lesson, you will take a look at many different examples of synonyms.

Take a look at the picture of the elephant below. What words can you use to describe the elephant's size? Tell your parent or teacher.

There are many words you can use to describe the size of the elephant. You could say the elephant is big, large, or huge. All of these words are synonyms — they all have the same meaning.

How do you think the man in the picture below is feeling? He looks like he is freezing! Tell your parent or teacher a synonym you could use that means the same thing as freezing.

You could say the man is cold or chilly. All of these words have the same meaning. Tell your parent or teacher what words with the same meaning are called.
