Where do you sleep at night? In a bed? In a house?

Animals have homes, too—but their homes are called habitats!

Get ready to explore where animals live all around the world. Some animals sleep in trees. Some hide under the ground. Some swim in deep water.

Every animal has a place that fits its needs.

What Is a Habitat?

A habitat is the place where an animal lives. It gives the animal what it needs to survive.

A habitat gives an animal:

  • food to eat
  • water to drink
  • a place to rest
  • protection from danger

Animals do not live just anywhere. They live in places that help them stay safe and healthy.

Pets, Farms, and Wild Homes

Some animals live with people. These are pets. Dogs and cats live in houses. Fish live in tanks. Birds may live in cages.

Some animals live on farms. Cows, pigs, chickens, and horses live there. Chickens sleep in coops. Other animals walk around and eat grass in open fields.

Other animals live in the wild. That means they live outside in nature. They find their own food and build their own homes.

Forest Homes

Many animals live in forests. Forests have lots of trees.

  • Squirrels build nests in trees.
  • Chipmunks dig holes in the ground.
  • Bears and foxes rest in dens or caves.

Cold Places

Some animals live in very cold places like the Arctic.

Polar bears, penguins, and Arctic foxes live there. Many of these animals have thick fur or feathers to stay warm.

Some even have white coloring to blend in with the snow. This helps them hide from danger.

Hot Desert Homes

Deserts are very hot and dry.

Camels, snakes, and lizards live in deserts. Small animals, like rabbits and meerkats, dig burrows underground. The ground stays cooler than the hot air above.

Rainforest Homes

Rainforests are warm and wet. They have many tall trees.

Monkeys, birds, frogs, and snakes live here. Many animals live high in the trees. Others live on the ground or inside fallen logs.

Savannah Homes

A savannah has lots of grass and only a few trees.

Lions, zebras, elephants, and giraffes live here. Many of these animals stay in groups. Groups help them stay safe.

Ocean Homes

The ocean is full of life.

Fish, whales, dolphins, and sharks live in water. Some animals, like whales and dolphins, must come up for air. Fish often swim together in groups called schools.

Animals Live Everywhere!

Animals live in many different habitats.

  • forests
  • deserts
  • oceans
  • farms
  • rainforests
  • cold icy lands

Each place is just right for the animals that live there.

Now that you know what a habitat is and where animals live, it is time to practice what you learned.
