What happens to the number of apples below if one is eaten?

In this lesson, you will learn all about subtracting numbers from 1 to 10.

Subtraction is an important skill you can use if you have to take something away from a group. For example, in the picture above, there are four apples. If you eat one apple, that takes one apple from the group.

Look at the apples below. How many apples are left after you take away one? Share your answer with your parent or teacher:

Did you say if you ate one apple, there would only be three left? Great work! If you take one away from four, you will only have three apples left. Four minus one equals three.

Look at the next example. There are six circles below. What would happen if you took three circles away? How many would be left? Share your answer with your parent or teacher.

Did you say there would only be three circles left if you took away three? Great work! If you have six circles and you take away three, there will only be three left. Six minus three equals three.

Move on to the Got It? section to practice subtracting numbers by making drawings to answer some subtraction questions.
