Did you know that your heart will beat, on average, eight billion times in your lifetime? Find out what other fascinating facts there are to learn about the circulatory system!

You are going to explore the circulatory system in this lesson.

The circulatory system contains the blood that pumps all around your body and carries all the important stuff! Before you learn all about this very important system, draw a picture of what you think a human heart looks like. Do you think it looks like this:

You will see what a human heart really looks like in this lesson. Check it out!

First, the circulatory system is driven by the heart. The heart is the hardest-working muscle in your body, and it pumps blood into your veins all day, every day! Your heart is the size of your fist. Since you grow every day, and your fist gets bigger, so does your heart.

Did you know that the heart is a muscle? Did you know that it beats that many times? Your heart is an extremely important part of your body.

Did your drawing of a heart look like the one above? You can kind of see how the human heart looks like what we all think of when we think of a heart. Now, draw a human heart like the one above and compare the two drawings. Do you see similarities? Do you see differences? Discuss this with your teacher or parent.

There are other very important parts of your circulatory system that work together with your heart. You have miles and miles of piping in your body called blood vessels.

The vessels, or tunnels, are called veins, arteries, and capillaries. If you were to stretch these all out, they would be long enough to circle the earth 2.5 times!

The 60,000 miles of blood vessels in your body are how blood with oxygen and nutrients is delivered to all the cells in your body. Check out what blood vessels look like:

The human heart pumps so hard that it would squirt blood up to 30 feet if you opened a vein and let the blood fly out! That is a lot of pressure and strength. Because of the hard work that the heart does all day, every day, you need to take good care of your heart so it will take good care of you!

Wow! The circulatory system is fascinating! Did you know that a girl's heart beats faster than a boy's? There are many parts of your body that you can't live without, but the heart is one of the most important.
