Explore the alphabet from A to Z with silly sounds, fun words, and playful activities that build beginning sound skills!
March Through the Alphabet!
Get ready for a silly sound adventure from A to Z!
Each letter of the alphabet has a sound it loves to make. Some are soft like /s/ in snake, and some are bouncy like /b/ in ball.
Warm up with a sound chant.
A is for alligator — chomp!
B is for bear — growl!
C is for cat — meow!
D is for dog — woof!
Now, it's your turn!
In this lesson, you’ll meet a book that takes you on a trip through the whole alphabet—with sounds, animals, and lots of surprises along the way!
What Are Beginning Sounds?
Beginning sounds are the very first sounds you hear when you say a word out loud.
These sounds help you figure out which letter the word starts with.
Try this: Say the word duck slowly — d-d-duck.
That’s right — /d/!
Now try this one: Goat — say it slowly — g-g-goat.
The beginning sound is /g/!

When you say a word and stretch out the beginning, your ears start to match sounds with letters.
That’s called phonemic awareness, and it’s a superpower for reading!

Now, it’s time for a story that travels through the whole alphabet—from A to Z!
As you listen to the read-aloud of Click, Clack, Quackity-Quack by Doreen Cronin, try this challenge.
Listen for the beginning sound!
Each page of the story matches a letter with a sound and a word.
Here are some examples.
D — Duck dashing → Listen for the /d/ sound.
F — Flippety-flip → That’s the /f/ sound.
P — Pig peeping → Hear the /p/?
Say the beginning sound before the word if you can!
You can even stretch the sound out loud.
“F-f-flippety-flip!”
“S-s-sheep sleeping!”
By the end of the story, you’ll have traveled from A to Z with a whole team of animals and sounds.
Listening to how each word starts will help build your sound memory—and get you ready to try some beginning sound fun of your own!
