So You Like to Argue? Welcome to the World of Debate!

Have you ever had a strong opinion about something—like which video game is best or whether pineapple belongs on pizza—and found yourself trying to convince your friends you were right?

  • Guess what?

That’s debate!

Competitive debate is like a sport for your brain. You get to research real-world issues, build strong arguments, and then present them with confidence.

It’s not about yelling or fighting. It’s about learning to think fast, speak clearly, and really listen to the other side—even when you don’t agree.

  • Ready to find out what it takes to become a powerful speaker and a thoughtful thinker?

Jump in.

What Is Competitive Debate (And Why It’s Awesome)

In a competitive debate, two teams go head-to-head arguing opposite sides of a topic.

One side supports the idea (called the affirmative) and the other side disagrees with it (called the negative).

But here’s the twist—you might have to argue either side, even if it’s not your personal opinion! That’s part of the fun and challenge.

Debaters learn how to do the following.

Break down complicated ideas into clear points

Speak with confidence in front of an audience

Think on their feet during fast-paced discussions

Spot weak arguments or tricks in someone else's words

Research facts and use them to back up their opinions

Stay calm—even if things get intense

Most debates follow a set structure and time limits. You’ll have an opening speech, a time to ask and answer questions (called cross-examination), and a final speech to sum things up.

Judges listen carefully and score based on how well you make your case—not whether they agree with you.

Debating isn't just about winning an argument. It’s about building skills you can use for life, like these.

Being a better public speaker.

Staying cool under pressure.

Understanding current events.

Respecting different points of view.

Thinking clearly and logically.

You’ll also meet other students from all over the country, and some may even become lifelong friends. Debate tournaments are exciting places where ideas fly, and everyone’s voice matters.
