Welcome to the first Related Lesson in our Root Word series!

In this series, you will learn the meaning of many commonly used roots, word parts that make up a longer word.

Latin roots are found in many English words. These roots have meanings and are used to make longer words.

There are also Greek root words as well. Many of today's modern English words come from Ancient Greek and Latin words.

A basic word to which affixes (prefixes and suffixes) are added is called a root word. A root word, when added to a prefix or a suffix, makes a new word because it forms the basis of the new word. The root word is also a word in its own right.

Look at the word toxic.

Look the meaning of the word toxic up in the regular dictionary or online at dictionary.com.

TOX is the root of the word toxic. Notice that without the suffix ic, it is not a word on its own.

The root tox means poison.
