Welcome back!

You will be reading the novel's conclusion in this lesson! The focus in Chapters 11 and 12 is elements of plot.

Plot usually focuses on five basic elements.

  1. exposition (or introduction)

The exposition is at the beginning of the novel when the reader is first introduced to the characters and the setting.

  1. rising action

The rising action is the events that move the story forward and often contribute to the conflict within the story.

  1. climax

The climax is the moment in the story when the action takes a dramatic turn.

  1. falling action

The falling action is the events that occur after the climax that leads to the resolution of the conflict.

  1. resolution (or conclusion)

The resolution is the conclusion of the story when the conflict is resolved and the characters' story reaches its end.

Often, the climax and resolution are packed into the end of a novel. This is the case in Lord of the Flies, where the climax and resolution are all within these last two chapters.
