Look in the Mirror… Really Look

Take a second and imagine this:

  • You walk past a mirror… and stop.
  • You take a closer look.
  • What do you notice first?
  • Your eyes?
    Your smile?
    Your hands?
  • Something small that no one else even thinks about?

Now here’s the big question.

  • What is the best part of you—and why?

Everyone Has a Different Answer

If you asked a group of students this question, you would get lots of different answers.

Some might say:

  • “My eyes are the best because I can see the world.”

  • “My hands are the best because I can build and create.”

  • “My smile is the best because it makes others feel happy.”

There is no single “right” answer. That’s because this is opinion writing.

An opinion tells what you think or feel—and your answer belongs to you.

My body parts, my abilities

Your Opinion Needs Reasons

Saying your favorite part is just the start.

Strong writers explain why.

Example:

“My nose is the best part of me because it helps me smell delicious food and reminds me of my family.”

That answer works because it:

  • names the body part

  • gives clear reasons

  • adds personal meaning

Your reasons can be about:

  • what the body part does

  • how it helps you

  • how it looks

  • what it reminds you of

My nose is the best part!

Think Beyond What You See

The “best part” does not have to be something obvious.

You can choose:

  • eyes, ears, hands, or feet

  • hair, smile, or voice

  • even something like your heart (for kindness) or brain (for thinking)

Example ideas:

“My feet are the best because they help me run and play.”

“My voice is the best because I can speak, sing, and share ideas.”

“My heart is the best because it helps me care about others.”

My feet, voice, and heart

Describe It So Others Can Picture It

Good writing helps others see what you mean.

Use describing words to explain:

  • size (small, big)

  • shape (round, long)

  • color (bright, dark)

Example:

“My curly hair is the best part of me because it is soft, bouncy, and fun to style.”

The more details you give, the clearer your idea becomes.

My curly red hair is special

Build Your Opinion Step by Step

Here’s a simple plan to follow.

  1. Start with your opinion.

“The best part of me is my ______.”

  2. Add 2–3 reasons.

    • What does it do?

    • Why do you like it?

  3. Add a closing sentence.

Say your idea again in a strong way

Example:

“The best part of me is my hands. They help me draw, build, and create amazing things. That is why my hands are my favorite.”

My hands are the best part

Your Turn to Shine

You now know how to:

  • choose a part of yourself

  • explain your opinion

  • support it with strong reasons

  • describe it clearly

Next, you will practice choosing your “best part” and building your ideas step by step before turning them into your own writing.
