  • What do you think the word consciousness means?

Write down your best guess at the definition before reading on to find out!

Word consciousness is being aware of and interested in words and what they mean. It involves looking deeper into what words mean, including any multiple meanings.

If you missed the previous lesson on The Tempest, go to the Related Lessons in the right-hand sidebar.

As you read The Tempest, you will keep a vocabulary log of the new vocabulary words you encounter.

Print The Tempest Vocabulary Guide from Downloadable Resources in the right-hand sidebar. Each act lists ten words.  You can also add words to your log if you think it will be helpful.

Follow these steps as you create entries in your vocabulary log.

  1. Write down the sentence or line from the play that contains the word, and underline the word.
  1. Determine the part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.).
  1. Identify the source and the page number.
  1. Define the word in the following three steps.
  1. Predict the definition using context. (You can put a question mark next to the word to show it's your best guess.)
  1. Write down the dictionary definition that best describes how the word was used in the original sentence. (Remember, the dictionary can include multiple definitions.)
  1. Use your own words to restate the dictionary definition.
  1. List any word variations, such as the noun or verb form, a synonym, and an antonym.
  1. Write a sentence using the word the same way it is used in the original sentence. Be sure to underline the word in your sentence.

If you want to add to your entry, you can draw a symbol or picture of the word.
