Countries come and go. Even during your brief lifetime, the political landscape may be changing. What does a government require to survive?

In this lesson, you will learn about a once poor country that couldn’t even maintain control of its own borders.

Through hard work and dedication, that country has become one of the leading countries in all of Europe. As you learn about the history, geography, and culture of Poland, take notes on how Poland has overcome the different challenges it has faced. Click on the headings below to learn some facts about Poland:

Poland has gone from being a country that couldn’t maintain control to one of the wealthiest countries in Europe. Use what you have learned about the history, geography, and economy of Poland to answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper:

  • What about this region makes it valuable?
  • What changes have allowed Poland to grow and thrive? What lessons can be learned from these changes?
  • How can other countries imitate Poland to find the same success?
  • What impact(s) has Poland's growth had on the region where you live?

Discuss your responses with your teacher or parent.

Then, move on to the Got It? section to take a closer look at why the Polish economy has experienced such large economic growth in recent years.
