  • What unit of measurement is used to measure a football field?
  • How many yards can fit in a football field?
  • What if your front yard is bigger than your neighbor's yard? Whose yard do you use?

A football field is measured by yards.

Of course, we don't use real yards like your front yard; we use a type of ruler!

In the previous Related Lesson, found in the right-hand sidebar, you learned how to measure with feet

  • Did you know there are three feet in a yard?

You can use a yardstick to measure large objects, rooms, and even distances from one place to another. You will need a yardstick for this lesson.

A yardstick has both

  • three feet on it
  • and thirty-six inches on it

yardstick

Anything that is measured in yards will either end with the word, "Yard(s)" or "YD." For example, if you measured a car and it was three yards long, you could either write, "three yards" or "3 YD."

Make sure you include this every time you write down a measurement that is measured with yards.

You can use a yardstick to measure things that are very large.

  • Can you name some things you could measure with a yardstick?
