What Are Reflexive Pronouns?

Reflexive pronouns are words that refer back to the person who is doing the action in a sentence.

Myself refers to me.

Yourself refers to you.

Himself refers to him.

Herself refers to her.

Itself refers to it.

Ourselves refers to us.

Yourselves refers to you all.

Themselves refers to them.

Here are some examples.

I made a sandwich for myself.

She drew a picture of herself.

They taught themselves to play the piano.

Me vs. Myself

It's important to know when to use me and myself.

Use me when someone else does something to or for you. Use myself when you do something to or for yourself.

Here are some examples.

  • Correct: Alex and I went to the park.
  • Incorrect: Alex and myself went to the park.
  • Correct: She gave the book to me.
  • Incorrect: She gave the book to myself.

Remember: Myself is used when I is the subject doing something to me. If someone else is involved, use me.
