How many states are part of the United States? Were there always united states in the United States?

The United States is the fourth largest country in the world and it is composed of 50 unique states.

When the United States was formed, it was only composed of 13 states. As time passed, the additional 37 states have slowly been added, with the 50th as late as 1959. In this lesson, you will learn when each state was added to the United States, and you will research the history of how a few states got their start.

For this activity, you will look up when each state was added to the Union and enter it on the slides below. You can use the site provided as well as your own research to find the information. You can perform your own research by typing the name of the state into a search engine, such as Google.

When you are finished, you can export your work to share with your teacher or parent. Discuss the following questions:

  • If you live in the United States, when did your state join the Union?
  • Why do you think each of the states was added at different times?

Hold on to your work.

You will continue to use it in the Got It? section to create a graph that displays your findings.
