Even and Odd Rules: Part 3

Contributor: Meghan Vestal. Lesson ID: 11296

Even and odd rules of multiplication aren't just the "product" of someone's imagination; they help you predict if the answer is even or odd. Take an online quiz and make flashcards to learn the rules!

Without solving the problem, can you determine whether the product will be even or odd? 24 x 9 =

Throughout this series, you have learned the difference between even and odd numbers, and you have learned how to accurately predict whether a sum or difference will be even or odd.

Let's review what you have already learned. Predict whether the outcome of each problem will be even or odd. Then, solve to find out if you predicted correctly. When you are finished, show your work to your teacher or parent:

  1. 2,383 + 292 =
  2. 455 – 93 =
  3. 4,599 + 1,207 =

How did you do on the review problems? If your predictions were incorrect, make sure to go back and review the first two Related Lessons, found in the right-hand sidebar, before moving on with this lesson.

In this lesson, you will continue to build onto what you have been learning by predicting whether a product will be even or odd. What is a product? Discuss the answer with a teacher or parent.

A product is the answer to a multiplication problem. Like addition and subtraction, there are a few simple rules you can remember to help you make a prediction about a multiplication problem:

even x even = even

6 x 4 = 24

odd x odd = odd

9 x 3 = 27

odd x even = even

5 x 4 = 20

even x odd = even

2 x 7 = 14

How do these rules compare to the rules for addition and subtraction? Discuss your ideas with your teacher or parent. Then, move on to the next section to practice predicting products.
