You've journeyed through the endless grassy plains, encountered unique creatures, and learned about the importance of these incredible ecosystems.

Remember, grasslands are not just home to animals and plants but also play a crucial role in maintaining a balanced planet.

Now, armed with knowledge and curiosity, go forth and capture the beauty of grasslands as you review in this lesson!

grasslands

This lesson reviews the locations of grasslands, the types of grasslands, and the plants and animals that are found in grasslands.

Grasslands are found on every continent except Antarctica.

  • Why do you think you can't find grasslands in Antarctica?

Grasslands don't exist in Antarctica because of the frigid temperatures and icy landscapes.

There are two types of grasslands: temperate grasslands and tropical grasslands (savannas).

Let's review the two types.

Temperate grasslands have hot summers and cold winters. They get 20-35 inches of rain yearly, much less than tropical grasslands.

Grass prairies are areas of temperate grasslands that get the most rain and have the tallest grasses.

Short grass steppes get the least amount of rain and have short grasses.

Tropical grasslands are also called savannas. Tropical grasslands stay warm all year round. During the winter season, the savanna gets very dry.

The summer season is much longer than winter, bringing lots of rain. Tropical grasslands get 20-60 inches of rain every year!

Grasslands are home to hundreds of grasses and wildflowers. Trees are rare in grasslands for these three reasons.

  1. The dry season doesn't allow the trees to get enough water.
  2. Grazing animals eat the saplings, so they can never grow into trees.
  3. Wildfires burn them before they can grow.

Temperate and tropical grasslands are home to similar and different animals. Both have large grazing animals that feed on the grass there, and both are home to small animals that live in the grasses or burrows under the grass.

Animals that live in the grassland have certain characteristics that allow them to survive.

They have earth-toned fur that allows them to camouflage with the grassland plants.

The animals in the grasslands are nocturnal, so the nights make them less visible to predators.

Many animals migrate during the dry season to find water.
