As the witches say in Act IV of Macbeth, "The charm's firm and good."

Read Act V to discover what happens to Macbeth as Malcolm and Macduff return to Scotland, backed by the English army!

As you saw by the end of Act IV, Malcolm and Macduff have made a pact to return to Scotland to contest Macbeth for the throne.

After the disastrous feast at the end of Act III, Macbeth visited the witches again to gain a new set of prophecies. From the witches, he learns:

  • to beware of Macduff
  • that only a person not born of woman can kill him
  • that he will rule until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane Hill where his castle is located

After receiving these prophecies, Macbeth orders Macduff's castle to be attacked and all inhabitants killed. Macduff, who had already fled to England, escaped the massacre, but learned about it after securing Malcolm's assistance in attempting to overthrow Macbeth.

At the beginning of Act V, Malcom and Macduff plan their attack.

For Act V, continue reading Macbeth.

Also, continue reading the play aloud to hear the dialogue. You are now ready to read Act V.

When you've finished your reading, move on to the Got It? section.
