Lesson Plan - Get It!

Audio:

When you think of positives and negatives, do you think of batteries and their charge? Well, this lesson will hopefully get you CHARGED UP for multiplying positives and negatives. By the end of it, you should be able to power up your mind to MASTER MULTIPLICATION!

Just as there are sign rules when adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers, there are also rules when multiplying.

They are pretty straightforward, and there are no "tricks" we do when multiplying.

The sign rules of multiplication are:

  • Positive times positive = positive
  • Negative times negative = positive
  • Negative times positive = negative (NOTE: Could be "positive times negative," too. Basically, one of each multiplied together is going to equal a negative.)

This Multiplying Negative Numbers video by Mathematics is Fun explains these rules and expands a little on multiplication of positive and negative numbers:

Now, it is your turn to try a few multiplication problems using these sign rules.
