Imagine your favorite cookie in front of you.

  • What kind is it?
  • What does it smell like?

MMmmmm . . .

Now, your best friend comes up and would like some of your cookie. Since you are a nice friend, you break the cookie into 2 equal parts.

  • Do you know what that is called?

Each piece is a half.

  • What if you have more hungry friends?

So, you and your best friend each have a half of the cookie.

Here come 2 more friends. You divide your half into 2 equal pieces, and your friend divides their piece into 2 equal pieces.

Now all 4 of you have an equal amount of cookie. Each of you has a fourth.

If you put the 4 pieces of the cookie back together, you would call that a whole because you have the whole cookie again (except maybe for some crumbs!).

Watch the video below to see friends share a candy bar and pizza.
